For maximum visibility, combine fluorescent and reflective materials. The most effective fluorescent colors for horse visibility generally are yellow, orange, and pink, with the best choice depending on the specific environment and lighting conditions.

Factors for Effective Visibility

• Human Vision: For humans, fluorescent colors work by absorbing UV light and appearing to “glow,” which increases daytime visibility, especially in low light conditions like fog, dawn, or dusk.
• Horse Vision: Horses have dichromatic vision and see a reduced spectrum of colors compared to humans (they confuse reds, oranges, and greens). For the horse’s own awareness of obstacles, fluorescent yellow, white, and bright blue provide the highest contrast.
• Background Contrast: A color’s effectiveness is highly dependent on the background.
  • Yellow is highly visible on roads and in low light but may blend in with golden fields (e.g., corn or rapeseed).
  • Orange stands out well against green foliage or in wooded areas but can blend into autumn hedgerows or during a strong orange sunset.
  • Pink is an unnatural color in most environments and often provides excellent contrast, especially against dark backgrounds or during autumn.

The most effective strategy is to use a combination of colors and materials to ensure visibility across all conditions. 

• Combine Fluorescent & Reflective: Fluorescent materials provide daytime visibility, while reflective strips are essential for visibility at night by bouncing back light from vehicle headlights.
• Mix Colors: Using a mix of yellow and orange (or pink) can help “trick the eye” and prevents the horse/rider from blending into a single type of background.
• Strategic Placement: Place high-visibility items at multiple points, including on the horse’s legs, tail, and the rider’s upper body. Movement of the horse’s legs makes reflective leg bands especially noticeable.
• Add Lights: For riding in poor visibility or at night, add LED lights (white facing forward, red to the rear) to further enhance visibility.
