This is the standard driving bit with either two slots, as in this case, or three slots which give more rein options. The mouthpiece is a straight bar mouth which lies straight across the tongue pressing it down into the lower jaw. Always worn with a curb chain which should be set so that the cheek cannot go back more than 45 degrees as the rein is pulled.
