Abbey England Coscoquero Pelham (Inc Chain)

The most common of the pelhams used in Polo.

• • The Abbey England Coscoquero Pelham (Inc Chain) is a ‘two in one’ bit being distinctive by having; a curb chain, two points of rein attachment and a cheek that extends below the mouthpiece.
  • The centre piece known as a spade rotates and pushes into the roof of the mouth.  It is crucial that the curb chain is set well or the spade can badly bruise the roof of the mouth.
  • The Spade (copper roller) encourages the horse to mouth the bit and moves on the tongue to stop the horse leaning into the bit.
  • Used with double reins or Pelham Roundings, the rein attached to the rings at the lower end of the cheek gives the leverage action which functions in combination with the curb chain.

• It is advisable to use a Lipstrap which holds the curb chain flat and correctly positioned in the chin groove.

Fit the chain so that contact is made upon the chin groove.  That way, the bit cheeks will tilt to an angle of 45 degrees from the point of rest.

The curb chin must not be too tight or too loose.  Abbey England Coscoquero Pelhams are supplied with a steel curb chain.
